Jason Hornbuckle is not a happy little boy. For the past hours he has complained of pain when he swallows, has a headache, and has vomited twice. His mother decides to take the seven-year-old to his pediatrician.
Upon examining Jason, the doctor fi nds that Jason’s pharynx, tonsils, and uvula are swollen and erythematous (red) and his tonsils are studded with white areas of exudate. He is febrile (temperature degrees centigrade) with tender, bilateral, cervical lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes) A Complete Blood Count (cbc) performed on a sample of Jason’s blood reveals that he has a leukocytosis (increased number of wbcs) due to a neutrophila (increased number of neutrophils).
Jason is diagnosed as having acute bacterial pharyngitis and treated with phenoxymethyl penicillin for fi ve days. A throat swab taken before starting antibiotics grows beta-hemolytic streptococci (Group A). After three days of treatment, Jason’s temperature has returned to normal and he has made an uneventful recovery.
Questions
. The pediatrician described Jason’s pharynx, uvula, and tonsils as swollen and red. What are the
four cardinal signs of inflammation, and how does each relate to changes in the blood vessels at a
site of inflammation?
. The exudation on Jason’s tonsils consisted primarily of neutrophils, and the cbc that was performed
indicated that the number of neutrophils in his circulation was increased. What role do neutrophils play in the resolution of a bacterial infection? In the course of your answer explain terms such as adhesion molecules, diapedesis, chemotaxsis, opsonization, and phagocytosis.
. Jason’s physician noted that Jason’s cervical lymph nodes were enlarged, a condition referred to
as lymphadenopathy. Describe the structure and function(s) of lymph nodes, and list the other
organs and tissues that comprise the lymphatic system.
. Describe the anatomic location and function of tonsils.
. What is the mechanism by which fever is induced and what are its benefits in terms of combating
an infection?

In this SLP, you will prepare a presentation, consisting of 15 slides, in which you provide your audience with information on the following areas
1) Introduce the anatomy of the knee and shoulder joints (articulating surfaces of bone).
2) Discuss the anatomy of the knee and shoulder. Include labels of:
Knee
•The ligaments ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL, (LABEL WITH THE FULL NAMES) the menisci
•The muscles that cross the knee joint: the quadriceps (label all four) and the hamstrings (label all three)
Shoulder
•glenoid labrum
•bursa and tendon sheath
•rotator cuff muscles
•rotator cuff ligaments
•the major muscles that cross the shoulder to move the humerus: deltoid, pectoralis major, and trapezius
3) Label the tendons, ligaments, and/or internal joint structures that are commonly damaged and what motions cause that damage.
4) Provide examples of therapies used to treat those injuries.

Search the internet and find out why athletes might abuse this drug and the physical damages it might cause. Take a stand on the issue of using drugs to maximize performance in sports. 5. Since the invention of the first vaccine in the 1700s, there has been controversy whenever a new vaccine is introduced. Are they safe? Do they work? Search the internet and find credible vs. questionable sites about vaccine usage. Using this information, what are your thoughts about the safety of vaccinations? Were you vaccinated as a child? Will you vaccinate your children?
