Anatomy and physiology

Jason Hornbuckle is not a happy little boy. For the past  hours he has complained of pain when he swallows, has a headache, and has vomited twice. His mother decides to take the seven-year-old to his pediatrician.
Upon examining Jason, the doctor fi nds that Jason’s pharynx, tonsils, and uvula are swollen and erythematous (red) and his tonsils are studded with white areas of exudate. He is febrile (temperature  degrees centigrade) with tender, bilateral, cervical lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes) A Complete Blood Count (cbc) performed on a sample of Jason’s blood reveals that he has a leukocytosis (increased number of wbcs) due to a neutrophila (increased number of neutrophils).
Jason is diagnosed as having acute bacterial pharyngitis and treated with phenoxymethyl penicillin for fi ve days. A throat swab taken before starting antibiotics grows beta-hemolytic streptococci (Group A). After three days of treatment, Jason’s temperature has returned to normal and he has made an uneventful recovery.

Questions
. The pediatrician described Jason’s pharynx, uvula, and tonsils as swollen and red. What are the
four cardinal signs of inflammation, and how does each relate to changes in the blood vessels at a
site of inflammation?
. The exudation on Jason’s tonsils consisted primarily of neutrophils, and the cbc that was performed
indicated that the number of neutrophils in his circulation was increased. What role do neutrophils play in the resolution of a bacterial infection? In the course of your answer explain terms such as adhesion molecules, diapedesis, chemotaxsis, opsonization, and phagocytosis.
. Jason’s physician noted that Jason’s cervical lymph nodes were enlarged, a condition referred to
as lymphadenopathy. Describe the structure and function(s) of lymph nodes, and list the other
organs and tissues that comprise the lymphatic system.
. Describe the anatomic location and function of tonsils.
. What is the mechanism by which fever is induced and what are its benefits in terms of combating
an infection?
. What is the mechanism by which the number of circulating white blood cells is increased?

Anatomy and Physiology

Anatomy & Physiology is the study of the body as a whole, subdivided into body systems and then further broken down into the sub units of organs, tissues and cells. In this Authentic Assessment, the student will discuss the common diseases associated with the body systems covered in AHLT 125, the resulting diagnostic treatments, treatments, prognosis, and complications of treatments, disease prevention strategies and reflection of topic chosen.
After completion of this project, the student will have the knowledge, skills and behaviors required to complete a research project.
In addition to your textbook and medical dictionaries, use a minimum of two reliable reference sources that can provide worthwhile information for you to use.
Remember to use the information literacy skills you gained in COMM 150 and refined throughout your program of study to help you make judgments on the most appropriate sources to use. You may find the Medline and Health Source Academic databases helpful, as well as the following websites: www.NIH.gov, www.CDC.gov , and www.health.harvard.edu. The library at both campuses has a book reserved for this project: Booth, K.A., Whicker, L.G., Wyman, T.D. (2014) Medical Assisting Administrative and Clinical Procedures with Anatomy and Physiology. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill
Each assignment should follow the requirements of the Bryant & Stratton College APA Style Guide. Please meet with the Learning Center coordinator to review your paper BEFORE final submission.
Bryant & Stratton Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this assessment, students will be able to:
6. Discuss the common diseases associated with the body systems and the resulting diagnostic treatments.
MAERB Core competencies:
Anatomy & Physiology I C:
6. Identify common pathology related to each body system
7. Analyze pathology as it relates to the interaction of body systems
8. Discuss implications for disease and disability when homeostasis is not maintained
9. Describe implications for treatment related to the pathology
Based on the information you learned from classroom discussions, assigned readings, and research the following information for the body systems listed:
Integumentary System Lymphatic System
Muscular System Respiratory System
Skeletal System Cardiovascular System

Competency Assessment for MAERB Core Curriculum
AHLT 120 Anatomy & Physiology II
Winter 2014 Page 2
Each student will research and complete a disease report that will include the following:
 define a common pathology for each of the body systems listed on page 1
 examine how this pathology effects one other body system (hint: refer to Appendix E of textbook for guidance)
 record the symptoms that patient may experience
 discuss how the pathology contributes to the symptoms
 illustrate the treatment related to the pathology
 generate the potential for the patient to experience some form of disability from the pathology and it’s treatment Each essay will be due after the system is covered. The due dates for each essay are on the tracking calendar.

Anatomy and physiology

For your SLP, you have been asked to teach an anatomy and physiology course for a local vocational nursing school. In order to do this, you are going to need to prepare a PowerPoint presentation that will be used in your lectures.

In this SLP, you will prepare a presentation, consisting of 15 slides, in which you provide your audience with information on the following areas

1) Introduce the anatomy of the knee and shoulder joints (articulating surfaces of bone).

2) Discuss the anatomy of the knee and shoulder. Include labels of:

Knee

•The ligaments ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL, (LABEL WITH THE FULL NAMES) the menisci

•The muscles that cross the knee joint: the quadriceps (label all four) and the hamstrings (label all three)

Shoulder

•glenoid labrum

•bursa and tendon sheath

•rotator cuff muscles

•rotator cuff ligaments

•the major muscles that cross the shoulder to move the humerus: deltoid, pectoralis major, and trapezius

3) Label the tendons, ligaments, and/or internal joint structures that are commonly damaged and what motions cause that damage.

4) Provide examples of therapies used to treat those injuries.

Don’t forget–the speaker notes should be sufficient in depth and breadth to demonstrate to me that you understood the topics under consideration in this module! Much of this information can be found in the videos you are required to watch!

SLP Assignment Expectations

Number of Slides: 15

Content of Slides: Your presentation should use UNLABELED images that you label yourself using textboxes and arrows to address each of the areas listed above.

Speaker Notes

Each slide will contain speaker notes sufficient to tell me what the purpose of each slide is—specifically, what you would say to a live audience that you were presenting your program to.

In 50 words or more please answer the following 6 question. Cite sources.

1. Name a common sports injury and the names of specific muscles, ligaments and other tissues they affect. What are some currently available ways to protect body tissue in a sports environment? When you comment on a peer post, comment on the peer’s ways to protect body tissue that he/she listed? Are they correct? Did he/she forget some? If you have additional knowledge, share it.

2. If you lost one of your five senses, which one could you live without, and how would you use the other four senses to compensate?

3. Via the internet a person can now look up almost any kind of medical information imaginable. First, research and define what is a credible vs. non-credible medical website, and include the URL from where you found your information. Next, find a “credible” medical website on any medical topic of interest to you, post the name of the cite and the complete URL and share with your fellow students why it is considered a credible website. Finally, find a “non-credible” medical website on the topic you selected and post the name of the cite and the complete URL and share with your fellow students why it is considered a non-credible website.

4. Erythropoetin is available as a pharmacological drug treatment. Recently a well-known cyclist was accused of using erythropoietin. Search the internet and find out why athletes might abuse this drug and the physical damages it might cause. Take a stand on the issue of using drugs to maximize performance in sports. Support your position using the sites you found.

5. Since the invention of the first vaccine in the 1700s, there has been controversy whenever a new vaccine is introduced. Are they safe? Do they work? Search the internet and find credible vs. questionable sites about vaccine usage. Using this information, what are your thoughts about the safety of vaccinations? Were you vaccinated as a child? Will you vaccinate your children?

6. Select either the digestive or urinary system, and research on the internet, the diet and or hygiene preventive care needed to maintain a health system. Then, in your own words, post a bullet list of preventative care tasks. Include the complete URL(s) of where you found your information
