Assignment 2 – Case study 2.
Roger is a 59 year old Caucasian male who presented to his GP for a general check-up and had no particular symptoms of concern. In addition to a number of blood tests, Roger was examined by the doctor, including recording of his blood pressure.
The doctor measured a blood pressure of 150/100mmHg. The GP discussed hypertension with Roger and discussed the importance of following this up.

Case questions:
1. Hypertension (in addition to a number of medical conditions) may be considered as primary or secondary. Explain these concepts giving 3 examples of secondary hypertension and their pathophysiology.

2. Roger was asymptomatic and only came for a check-up. Why is it important for this "silent disease" to be detected and appropriately treated?

3. The renin-angiotensin system plays a central role in blood pressure regulation. Explain the renin-angiotensin system with reference to Conn’s syndrome.

4. Hypertension is treated using a number if lifestyle and medication approaches. Explain how different anti-hypertensive medications act to reduce blood pressure.
