Chapter 1, Concepts of Health and Disease

Marcus is a 36-year-old male. He is a nonsmoker, is fit, and plays squash regularly with his friends.

The day after having a chicken sandwich at the squash club, he fell ill from what his doctor said was salmonellosis. Marcus had abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. He also had a fever and headache. His girlfriend visited his apartment regularly to bring him light, bland foods. Five days after the onset of his illness, he was ready to go back to work. (Learning Objectives 3, 4, 8, 10)

1.Define the signs and symptoms of the illness Marcus experienced.

2.Identify the features in Marcus’ situation that enabled him to adapt to the illness and eventually overcome it.

3.If a salmonella outbreak occurred in the community nursing home, the outcome might not have been as positive. In general terms, predict the morbidity and mortality of the illness in this situation. Why did you come to this conclusion?

Chapter 2, Concepts of Altered Health in Children

Jasmine is a young mother with a 2-month-old baby. She was delayed in coming home from the hospital because her daughter was born with physiologic jaundice.

Now Jasmine has begun to have difficulties with her daughter’s feedings. She’s able to breast-feed, but shortly after feeding, her daughter becomes irritable and cries loudly. Jasmine tries to comfort her infant by walking back and forth while gently rubbing her back, but her daughter is inconsolable. She knows her daughter is suffering from colic but isn’t sure if formula feedings will help. Furthermore, she doesn’t know what would be the best formula to try. Her biggest worry, however, is that her daughter will stop feeding and will not get the nourishment she needs to grow. (Learning Objectives 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)

1.Define physiologic jaundice. What is the pathophysiology of this condition?

2.What are the diagnostic criteria for infant colic? What is the typical cause of breast milk and cow’s milk intolerance in the infant?

3.Jasmine is afraid of her daughter failing to thrive. What does this mean? Compare the causes of “organic” and “nonorganic” failure to thrive.
