ethics definition

Ethics can be broadly be defined as a system of moral fundamentals which are used to govern the society. These are general rules of conduct which are principally accepted and used to control a certain class of human cultures or lifestyle.

Personal ethics are the guides a persons uses to govern one’s life. These are philosophical ideologies which determine one’s judgment on what is right or wrong (Harman, 1977). Business ethics on the other hand refer to business policies and practices which lay a firm foundation on possible controversial business issues which may arise in corporate deals, social discrimination, business responsibility, and social concerns such as bribery. These are mostly under the guidance of the law that govern the land. However, a corporate or a business may choose to follow higher grounds to gain popularity and acceptance by the society. The target society is most often the market the company hopes to win over (Sen, 1999). Professional growth is achieved by accepted standards of       ethics. Hence professional ethics refer to personal, one’s organizational ethics and corporate standards which are widely adopted.

One of personal dilemma I have faced is when one of my friends was convinced he he had found a life long partner but when I was introduced to this supposed lady I came to learn she was the wife of friend. The very minute the husband called to seek solace in me telling me he thought his wife was having an affair. I had known the wife for long enough. This was a personal dilemma.

The dilemma was resolved when I decided to tell my “so lucky” friend of the truth about his new found love. He decided to discuss the importance of faithfulness in marriage with her. This is a decision we arrived at after a deep reflection of what is morally right gathering the knowledge we had been imparted in college. This is also explains why a college educated person might get a higher role in society than one who is not. The education received is able to give rise to an informed decision.
