Present TWO scientific drawings that you have done during the microscopy practical. Use text books to help label the drawings as far as possible.
Use text books to find out the approximate size of one feature of your drawing, for example the size of a red blood cell, then use the following formula to indicate the magnification of the drawing..
Magnification = Drawing size
Actual size

For example, here the bacterium on the left of this picture is actually 2.3??m, but in the drawing it is 19mm. So the magnification is
19000??m = 8260

This is then written under the figure as shown.

For EACH figure, briefly answer the following questions related to what you have drawn (50 words per answer, 5 marks per answer, 6 answers):
1) Where would you find the tissue within the organ, and what function does the tissue carry out?
2) What features do the different cell types identified have that enable them to carry out their functions?
3) What pathological state(s) might you be able to identify in the tissues you have drawn (give at least one example)?

Homeostasis
Answer the following essay question in your own words. You are encouraged to draw your own labeled diagrams to support your answers. Be sure to include a descriptive legend for all figures. Correct referencing and presentation are worth up to 10 marks.

You have recently finished learning about the building blocks of life which include the organic compounds of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, ATP and nucleic acids. Using that knowledge and any additional research, please complete the unit Assignment.

The Kaplan Online Library is a great resource. Lipids are a group of organic compounds that make up 18-25% of one’s body mass. Incorporate your knowledge of trans-fatty acids and the adverse effects of trans-fatty acids on the body and write a 3 – 4 page paper (double-spaced) that includes the following topics:

 Discuss the various types of lipids found in the body and incorporate the following questions: o Why are lipids important?

o Can the body produce essential fatty acids (EFA’s)? If not, how does the body obtain these needed lipids?

o What are the benefits of Omega-3 and Omega 6 fatty acids?

o Are lipids able to cross the plasma membrane on their own? If not, how do they cross the membrane?

 What is cholesterol?

Research cholesterol more in depth.

o What are LDL and HDL?

o Where is cholesterol produced?

o What are the causes of high cholesterol?

o What are the treatments for reducing high cholesterol?

o What are the side effects of medication for treating high cholesterol?

o Do the benefits of lowering cholesterol outweigh the risks of taking medication?

o What options exist for a person to try and reduce his/her cholesterol without taking medication?

o Explain cholesterol homeostasis.

 Lastly, research the following food items:

o Low fat/reduced fat Lays® potato chips verses regular Lays potato chips (e.g., Lays brand)

o Low fat/reduced fat Chips Ahoy® chocolate chip cookies verses regular Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies (e.g., Chips Ahoy)

o Using one serving for each of the food items listed, report the following information: -total calories in grams -total fat grams
