  1. During a free play activity period, typically mid morning observe a child around 4-5 years of age. The goal of this activity is to observe children at play in a social situation. I suggest you plan to observe for about 30 min.
  2. Observe children at play and focus on their behaviors with little regard to other activities in the class room environment. Stay focused exclusively on the play activity as much as possible. You need to write a detailed description of what you see during the play activity.

2-3 page written document (350 words per page) where you compare and contrast the impact of context and personal qualities in the professional development of two professionals in their field (Framo and Fraenkel). Be sure to apply your skills in paraphrasing and using proper APA citations where required.

References: Fraenkel, P. (2005). Whatever happened to family therapy: It may be in better shape than you think. and Framo, J. L. (1996). A personal retrospective of the family therapy field: Then and now.

Consider using the following as the headings  for your paper:

• Identify each MFT and the context of how they found their way into the field.

• Discuss the challenges (external or internal) that each encountered in their professional paths as MFTs, if any.

• Discuss any similarities in their views of the history and future of the profession.

• Note differences in their views of the history and future of the profession.

• Finally, briefly discuss what this may mean for you as a beginning MFT.

In this discussion, you will consider perspectives on mathematical talent and ability.
View the video, Common Core in Mathematics: Shifts 2-6, at http://engageny.org/resource/common-core-in-mathematics-shifts-2-6

In the video, David Coleman, a contributing author to the Common Core, notes that many individuals endorse the falsehood that there are “math people and not math people.” He theorizes that “a set of core masteries” is what determines whether an individual is a math person or not.
• What do you think of David Coleman’s statements?
• From your experience, how can core mastery affect a student’s math abilities and his or her perception of being “a math person”?
• How can you open the door for all students to become “math people”?

Qualitative methodologies involve collecting non-numerical data, usually through interviews or observation. There are many approaches to qualitative research and no fully agreed upon “list” of methodologies. The text (Malec and Newman, 2013) describes six approaches in Section 3.1. The Frank and Polkinghorne (2010) article also describes three main qualitative approaches. The best way to learn about a variety of qualitative research methods is to read reports or articles of research around a topic you are interested in.

For your initial post, choose two articles that use a qualitative research method to answer a research question one of your topic of interest. Remember that qualitative research is exploratory in nature, and is used to go deeper into issues of interest and explore nuances related to the problem at hand. Common data collection methods used in qualitative research include group discussions, focus groups, in-depth interviews, and uninterrupted observations. Data analysis typically involves identifying themes or categories, or providing in-depth descriptions of the data. Use the Anderson (2006) and Lee (1992) articles to obtain a better understanding of what qualitative research includes..

Briefly describe the particular qualitative research approach/methodology utilized in each of the two articles you selected (e.g. case study, ethnographic study, phenomenological study, etc.). Refer to the week’s readings (or recommended articles) to help you explain. Compare and contrast the two qualitative methods used: What is the same and what is different and why? Post should be at least 300 words. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Select either question 1 or 2.
Question 1. Think of this question as an opportunity to help your fellow students as they graduate! Design a newsletter that gives tips/suggestions for workers to consider in balancing work and family, as well as types of benefits they might seek for a new employer. Think of this in the following way: You have (hopefully) learned about work and family issues that your fellow students who have not taken the class might not have thought of or considered. What do you think they need to know as they seek their first professional employment?

Question 2. This question also asks for a newsletter but asks you to combine information and advocacy for transnational families. You read in Trask about many of the issues faced by workers from other countries who are sending their wages home to family in developing countries. Approach this from the standpoint that your fellow Americans don’t know much about this issue, and if they do know anything they think it is a personal issue whether or not to use immigrant labor.

Select either question 3 or 4.
Question 3. You have learned about work/family issues from the micro as well as macro level in the class. At the micro level you learned about your own family and their work history. At the macro level you learned about issues involving global companies, banks, and work/family issues for people in different parts of the world. Given that our government has NOT solved these problems (so you don’t have to solve them all in order to get points for this question), what changes would YOU make at the macro level and why do you think they would work. Think of yourself as head of a new cabinet post called “The Buck Stops Here” (thank you Harry Truman), and you must make suggestions to President Obama about economic issues and government programs. Describe 3 changes that could be made to improve America’s ability to support the citizens of the nation in a fiscally responsible manner.

Question 4. You are in charge of educating your fellow Americans about human trafficking. Most of them don’t understand the scope of the problem, but have recently become aware that this type of activity exists, and they are watching what is happening with the school girls who were kidnapped in Africa this last week. Prepare a 1.5-2 page paper documenting the scope of the problem and what needs to be done. You may use your text as well as other resources to document the issue. Presume that people reading it are concerned but not necessarily informed.

Select either question 5 or 6.
Question 5. Trask documents how feminism has spread women’s rights and gender equality principles across the globe, but also that Western feminism is also highly individualistic, which may not work well in cultures that are more collectivist in orientation. How does she suggest we promote gender equality while also being aware of cultural differences? In other words, how can gender equality work with the global economy, both protecting women as workers but also recognizing their needs as family members? (This is not an easy question, but she does have some suggestions in her book- what are they? Which do you think might work?)
Question 6.
How is the globalization and commodification of caring labor changing social relationships inside and outside families? Do you see this change as ultimately helpful to families or problematic for families? Why do you see it as helpful or harmful? You might want to think about how this may be played out in the future as this trend in globalization and commodification is essentially a product of the new millennium.

John was a counselor and had been counseling a young woman for a couple of months.

Slowly over time, she started wearing provocative clothing to the sessions and began displaying some seductive behavior toward him. John wanted to make sure he protected himself, so he started meeting her in his office with the door wide open and having his secretary nearby.

Provide your opinion on how John was handling this situation. Was his solution good or bad? What is your opinion on “women counseling women” vs. “men counseling women”?

After watching the video, paraphrase the paragraphs below.  That is, re-write the passage in your OWN words.

The following passage is taken from your textbook, Chapter 1, p.33, third/fourth paragraphs.

“Experimental research requires, then, that the responses of at least two groups be compared.  One group will receive some special treatment—the manipulation implemented by the experimenter—and another group will receive no treatment or a different treatment.  Any group that receives a treatment is called an experimental group; a group that receives no treatment is called a control group.  In some experiments there are multiple experimental and control groups, each of which is compared with another group.

By employing both experimental and control groups in an experiment, researchers are able to rule out the possibility that something other than the experimental manipulation produced the results observed in the experiment.  Without a control group, we couldn’t be sure that some other variable, such as the temperature at the time we were running the experiment, the color of the experimenter’s hair, or even the mere passage of time, wasn’t causing the changes observed.”

Below is a list from which you will select one topic for the Week Two assignment, another topic for the Week Three assignment, and a third topic for both the Outline of the Final Paper and the Final Paper. The topic you select for your Outline of the Final Paper and this Final Paper must be different from the topics you select for the Week Two and Week Three assignments.
The topics include:

What do twin and adoption studies tell us about the effects of nature (i.e., genetic influences) and nurture (i.e., environmental influences) on human development? Select at least one of the main domains of human development (physical, cognitive, or social-emotional) for your answer.
How much credit or blame do parents deserve for the way we are? Select at least one of the main domains of human development (physical, cognitive, or social-emotional) for your answer.
To what extent are the lives of adolescents and young adults shaped by parental and peer influences?
Why do we have a need to belong (to affiliate with others)?
How do our bodies and minds change from early to late adulthood?
What are the factors that affect our well-being as middle aged and older adults?
Why are some people attracted to members of their own sex whereas others are attracted to members of the opposite sex?
How do memory and intelligence change as we age?
Does an infant’s temperament shape his/her cognitive and socio-emotional development?
Are babies pre-wired for survival?
Are adolescents more likely to engage in risk-taking behavior than older adults?
Can physical exercise affect cognitive performance in old age? Consider the time of occurrence of physical exercise (i.e., earlier in life or during old age) in your answer.
Are there personality traits related to longevity?
Does bilingualism improve brain functioning?
Why do students in the United States tend to under-perform in math and science?

Once you have chosen your topic, examine the various theories of human development learned in the course and choose one or two that best assist you in understanding the issues involved in your topic. In your assignment address the following:

Identify some of the major domains of human development and how they are impacted.
Examine the physical, biological, emotional, cognitive, and/or social factors that are affected.
Identify the stages of development that are affected and describe the cultural and historical perspectives of partitioning the lifespan that influence the interpretations of the available data on the topic.
Describe the influences of family, culture, and environment and the roles they play.

Be sure to examine the available research in human development before completing this assignment.

Writing the Final Paper

The Final Paper:

Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
Must include a title page with the following:
Title of paper
Student’s name
Course name and number
Instructor’s name
Date submitted
Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
You may use the introduction you developed during the Week Four assignment or a revised version if changes are deemed necessary.
Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
Conclude with an answer to the selected question. Did the evidence you surveyed answer the question satisfactorily?

Include an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the available evidence.
Illustrate how each source fits specific sections of your Final Paper. The goal is to demonstrate that supporting evidence exists for statements that are made in the paper.
If possible, suggest the course that future research should take if answers to the selected question are deemed less than conclusive.
Must use at least five scholarly sources, all of which must come from the Ashford University Library or Google Scholar.
Must summarize each article including the purpose of the investigation, its methodology, and results.
Rely on the brief summaries of the articles (including the purpose of each investigation, its methodology and results) that you developed during Week Four to construct an organized summary of the scientific evidence that answers the question you selected.
If possible, select peer-reviewed articles that summarize the evidence available in a given field of study (e.g., meta-analysis combines the findings of different studies to uncover trends, commonalities and differences).
Order the articles in the way you think you will discuss them in your paper. Then develop a summary of the scientific evidence that answers the question you selected.
You may reference your textbook and other required materials from the course; however, these will not fulfill the resource requirement.
Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
You may use the reference section you developed in the Week Four assignment as the final page of the paper.
