3)Sam,
I like your mention of “perceptual load theory”, it made me think of SID (sensory integration disorder). In this disorder the individual has a difficult time with sensory overload, their perceptions are in constant state of this fact. They have a difficult time with not getting overloaded, their perceptual recognition takes in everything and does not have a limit. Do you think that these individuals could be taught how to limit their perceptual intake in order for the recognition to occur more naturally without overloading?

Respond to the post below.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is not a new concept, is a better predictor of success than IQ and technical skills combined. In the 1980′s, Howard Gardner, in his important work on multiple intelligences, outlined the presence of seven domains of intelligence, two of them were interpersonal and intrapersonal, these combined were the forerunner of what we now know as emotional intelligence. In 1995 Daniel Goleman, the leading expert in this field, reported “IQ” is only a minor predictor of success in life, while emotional an social skills are far better predictors of success and well being than academic intelligence.
He outlines five crucial emotional competencies basic to social and emotional learning: (1) Self and other awareness, (2)
Mood management, (3) Self-motivation, (4) Empathy and (5) Management of relationships. The mastery of these five competencies results in enhanced emotional intelligence.
Cultural factors are the established beliefs, values, traditions, laws and languages of a nation or society. These factors also include the artistic values, marriage customs and religious beliefs that are indigenoous to a particular religion. Cultural factors have a significant effect on an individual’s buying decision. Every individual has different sets of habits, beliefs and principles which he/she develops from his family status and background. What they see from their childhood becomes their culture. Cultural factors influence social changes, there is an intimate relationship between society and culture.
In the case of Andres, he is disabled. He needs to be handle with a lot of care. Understanding his culture, family and his current social situation, it is very important. Andres depend from his family a lot; for emotional and physical support. These can only be achieved by applying the concepts of social and emotional intelligence (Lopes, Salovey and Straus, 2003).
The Social Worker would understand social and emotional intelligence by providing empathy to the client. Essentially awareness of the client social situation is a key to understand the client’s emotions, needs and concerns.

Answer these questions based on your reading of the relevant chapters in the text – Eysenck, M. W. & Keane, M. T. (2010). Cognitive Psychology: A Student’s Handbook. 6th edition.
1. Using PET to scan the brains of healthy adults, we find that more oxygen is used up in the right dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex when they are instructed not to laugh at a funny video compared to controls who are allowed to laugh if they want to. We conclude that the neural bases of impulse control resides in the right dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex. Critique the conclusion providing alternative conclusions.
2. What phenomenon can the Opponent Process theory explain, that the Young-Hemholtz theory cannot? Justify your answer.
3. What is the experimental evidence that the brain processes faces differently to the way it processes other objects?
4. Briefly explain how visual illusions have been used to investigate visually guided action (you should consider the dorsal/ventral stream distinction and the planning-control model).
5. Is attention object, or location based? How do we know?
Word limit Please adhere to a word limit of approximately 250 words per question (with no more than1500 words in total). You may include diagrams in your answers if you wish – these will not contribute to the word count. Please adhere to this word count. While there will be no explicit penalty for exceeding this word limit, marks will be deducted for including irrelevant information and excessively long submissions may suffer from marker fatigue.

Attention is a limited resources because a person can’t process all of the incoming information in the environment at once, there needs to be some type of mechanism(s) for directing attention (Riegler& Riegler, 2008). There are two things to think about when it comes to attention one is the first things that grab your attention and the other what are the things that you focus on during processing.
Nice comment here! You are right that there are the things we attend to, as well as the processing that occurs afterward. What cognitive processes support our attention to stimuli?
I think you make a good point where you say attention is not limited. However, our ability to focus attention does appear to have limitations. What would happen if we were able to attend to all things at the same time?

Discuss these issues in terms of what you have learned this week.
5-1 Psychologists like to study gambling behavior because it is believed that people who are gambling are acting very much like B. F. Skinner’s rats and pigeons. Use what you have learned this week to describe some of the principles of learning that might be observed in gambling behavior (and note that I am referring to any gambling behavior, not just pathological gambling or gambling addiction).

What does Heidegger think is the relationship between the subject-matter of ontology, on the one hand, and the subject-matter of Brentano’s psychology and Husserl’s phenomenology, on the other? What does Heidegger think is lacking in these previous attempts at first philosophy? Why does Heidegger think that ontology is the most fundamental discipline?
In pursuing and analyzing the work of some leading researchers in phenomenology; the “phenomenon” notion as introduced by Husserl in his phenomenology discusses the early development of phenomenological research and examines the usefulness of reflecting anew upon its field of objects, out of itself according to its own principle. Thus it embraces in itself the following two issues: phenomenon as “representation of the world as it is reflected in consciousness” and the essence of a thing “as it is in itself, hence all his ideas are based heavily on consciousness. This has however made it clear for Heidegger that with a full representation of the structure of his phenomenology he mainly focuses on the being in general. Thus this brings a clear relationship of the being which reveals itself in all forms with its separate entities such as consciousness. Thus Heidegger shows that the being is a unity of all other phenomenological categories and is thus the most fundamental discipline.

Respond to the post in the requirements:
An explanation of how social and emotional intelligence are related to cultural factors in the case of Andres could be how socially, Andres is an intelligent person who was able to sustain a successful practice as a child psychiatrist. Andres was able to support his family and provide for them and being of Hispanic heritage, it is important for the man of the family to support them and not be dependent upon them.
Culturally, Andres may have a traditional value and belief system which dictates the definition of an independent man. Andres may feel due to his physical limitations that he is not viewed as a man regardless of how often his devoted family members may state the opposite. According to Peck’s psychological development, in middle adulthood, some people in this category go through a stage called mental flexibility versus mental rigidity (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman 2013) pg. 470.
In my opinion, Andreas is demonstrating characteristics of this stage as although he has been educated on the importance of not attempting to complete tasks that are harmful for him such as ambulating without assistance, he continues to do so even at the risk of falling and injuring himself. Andres has been unfortunately stricken with a debilitating disease and he is not able to be as independent in manner areas of his life.
Andres is frustrated due to this reality, however, he was open to attending sessions in order to have someone besides his family to vent to (Plummer., Makris., & Brocksen 2014). In middle adulthood, some people in this stage of life of fixed in their ways and are not open to suggestions or opinions of others. Andres’s behaviors and feelings are not unique as many people who are used to being independent in the majority of areas of their lives and then become rapidly dependent in those areas, experience frustration and depression. “Social Intelligence (SI) is the ability to get along well with others, and to get them to cooperate with you. Sometimes referred to simplistically as “people skills,” SI includes an awareness of situations and the social dynamics that govern them, and a knowledge of interaction styles and strategies that can help a person achieve his or her objectives in dealing with others. It also involves a certain amount of self-insight and a consciousness of one’s own perceptions and reaction patterns.” https://www.karlalbrecht.com/siprofile/siprofiletheory.htm. While Emotional Intelligence (EI) can be defined as a person having the ability to the ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions. https://psychology.about.com/od/personalitydevelopment/a/emotionalintell.htm.
Culturally, some people demonstrate a deficit in their own perceptions of their intelligence level in these areas based on their own knowledge and value system.
As a social worker, in the case of Andres, I may apply the concept of emotional/social intelligence to how he is coping logically with his disability. I would also factor in cultural competence into my assessment of Andres. Andres seems in demonstrate difficulty expressing his need for help and as his social worker, I would try and assist Andres with learning skills to communicate effectively with those who care about him and for him. I would engage in active listening during sessions with Andres and try and help him find effective ways of expressing his needs as well as at the time, still feeling that he is not a burden on his family. I would encourage Andres to re-consider physical therapy and would provide resources, if any, to express how if he did attend, he may be able to function in some capacity independently. I would empathize with Andres’s feelings of inadequacy and would probably suggest sessions where he can interact with others who may be experiencing similar emotional/social problems and struggles.
An explanation of how social workers might apply social and emotional intelligence in social work practice can be to promote good health both physically and emotionally to those in therapy. “Counseling/psychotherapy often involves helping people to modify their patterns of social intelligence, particularly those that cause clients to have problems in their interpersonal relationships. (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman 2013) pg. 476. If a client is demonstrating challenges interacting appropriately, a social worker may want to offer their client alternative ways to socialize in an effort to improve their skills in this area. A social worker may also discuss with their client how they are feeling physically as usually when someone is not feeling well, it may affect how they interact with others. A social worker may apply emotional intelligence by being empathetic towards the needs of their clients and encouraging the client to work through problems that they are experiencing in a productive manner. A social worker may evaluate how their client is able to process information in their environment and it is then related to others.
